Jason MacLean on Free Speech at the University of Western Ontario
The present political moment is one of turmoil and political polarization, and the right to freedom of speech has never been more important, or more controversial, especially on university campuses. In this lecture law professor Jason MacLean will draw on recent campus controversies, including the #whitefragilitycankissmyass dust-up at Dalhousie, to explore whether it’s possible in these tumultuous times to harness the power of free speech -- can we limit the constitutional right to free speech in a way that is fair and principled? And is there a responsibility on the part of citizens – and university students especially – to listen and learn from those with whom they do not already agree, whose ideas they may consider not only repugnant, but also dangerous? In taking up these pressing questions Professor MacLean will argue for an approach that transcends the current ideological impasse between freeing and suppressing speech. Jason MacLean is an Assistant Professor at the College of Law at the University of Saskatchewan.
